As I approach another birthday this year, my mind can’t help but occasionally have some thoughts about aging, growing older and where I am in the cycle of life. I realize age is totally a mindset, but thoughts such as, “Hmmm, am I too old to do this or that?” have certainly crept up on me.
I was so inspired this week when I saw the news of Diane Nyad completing her swim from Cuba to Key West without a shark tank. Several things struck me. First, she’s 64, (quite a bit older than me), secondly, this was her fifth attempt, and third, the things she said when she got out of that grueling nearly 53 hour swim were SO inspirational it blew me away!
Experts have said over and over, that it was Diane’s mindset that made her a success. Not surprising. Research shows time and again that your mindset can help you achieve anything.
On “CBS This Morning” Tuesday, Nyad said her mantra through the swim was “find a way.” When describing her journey, she said, “It doesn’t matter … what you come up against because none of it’s going to be pleasant. You’re hardly ever out there going, ‘Oh, my God, isn’t it a beautiful moon tonight?’ The crew is feeling that. But you’re kind of suffering through the whole thing.
So my thought was, ‘everything you come up against say — and this is why people are relating to my story — all of us suffer heartache. All of us suffer difficulties in our lives. And if you say to yourself ‘find a way,’ you’ll make it through.”
Wow. Diane, as I enter my 53rd year, you totally inspire me to dream bigger, figure out what’s important to my heart and find a way! You’ve got my attention!
